It’s up to them to decide. And the surprises have only just begun…

Catriona McKenzie's directorial feature debut is a heartfelt, moving and uplifting story about a young boy's journey to save his home and ultimately himself.
Satellite Boy follows Pete, a 12 year old Aboriginal boy who lives with his elderly grandfather, Old Jagamarra (Gulpilil). Home is the abandoned outdoor cinema in the outback town of Wyndham. When it is threatened with demolition, Pete sees his world in jeopardy and sets off for the city. He is joined by his friend Kalmain, who has his own reasons for leaving town. Together the boys travel through epic and stunning Kimberley country and when they get lost in the bush, Pete has to remember some of the old Aboriginal bush skills his grandfather taught him for them to survive.
Fable-like in its storytelling, it shows a world torn between old and new, tradition and progress, nature and technology. Celebrating the importance of family, true friendship and cultural and spiritual identity, Satellite Boy is captivating and affecting.

The Look of Love is based on the outrageously true story of Paul Raymond (Steve Coogan), who once held the title of the Richest Man in Britain. Raymond’s notorious journey to success began in 1958, when he opened a groundbreaking gentlemen’s nightclub that was so hot no man could resist. A huge hit, it became the cornerstone of Raymond’s Soho empire which included a men’s magazine, nude theatre productions and millions in real estate.
Raymond’s personal life was as scandalous as his shows. His marriage to Jean Bradley (Anna Friel) fell apart when he met Fiona Richmond (Tamsin Egerton), a glamour model who became a pin-up star of his shows and magazines. The love of his life, however, was his daughter Debbie (Imogen Poots), who followed in his footsteps, plunging headfirst into a world of excess. |

Filmed with the startling immediacy of unfolding history Academy Award®-winning director Alex Gibney’s WE We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks details the creation of Julian Assange’s controversial website, which facilitated the largest security breach in U.S. history. Hailed by some as a free-speech hero and others as a traitor and terrorist, the enigmatic Assange’s rise and fall are paralleled with that of Pfc. Bradley Manning, the brilliant, troubled young soldier who downloaded hundreds of thousands of documents from classified U.S. military and diplomatic servers, revealing the behind-the-scenes workings of the government’s international diplomacy and military strategy.
In seeking to expose abuse in the corridors of power, Assange and Manning were undermined by forces within and without, as well as by their own human failings. We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks is a riveting, multi-layered tale about transparency in the information age and our ever-elusive search for the truth.

It has been nine years since Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) reconnected on the streets of Paris in Before Sunset, having met on a train to Vienna nine years earlier in Before Sunrise. Now the parents of two children, the couple are vacationing with friends on the coast of Greece.
Director Richard Linklater continues his enchanting tale of a chance meeting between two strangers, bringing to it a nuanced perspective only gained by years lived. Life carries with it new responsibilities and attitudes, forcing the two dreamers to reassess what they each want next. Bolstered by an increasingly refined onscreen chemistry between lead actors Delpy and Hawke, Before Midnight is a fitting third chapter in one of the great love stories of American independent cinema. Only God Forgives is a beautiful nightmare Following the international hit Drive, director Nicolas Winding Refn (who won the 2009 Sydney Film Prize with Bronson) reunites with Ryan Gosling for this brutal story of rage, betrayal and redemption. Set almost entirely in a neon-lit Bangkok at night, each frame in this dazzling, muscular film, which was shot by Larry Smith (Bronson, Eyes Wide Shut), is a carefully composed work of art. Gosling, in a restrained and complex performance, plays Julian, an American who runs a Thai boxing club in Bangkok and who is clearly involved in the criminal underworld. When Julian's brother Billy is murdered, their mother Jenna (Kristin Scott Thomas) - the dangerous head of a powerful criminal organisation - arrives in Bangkok to collect her son's corpse. She also dispatches Julian to find his brother's killers, which pits him against the 'Angel of Vengeance', a terrifying cop called Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm) who is determined to restore order, and unafraid to use his sword to do so. As the film patiently reveals more and more about their histories, these violent, damaged characters clash explosively, in the boxing ring and beyond. If there were any doubts before, with this Cannes Competition contender Winding Refn proves himself a master of the cinematic language of extreme violence.

Now You See Me pits an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse against "The Four Horsemen", a magic super-team of the world's greatest illusionists. The Four Horsemen pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, and then funnel the millions of stolen profits into their audiences bank accounts, while staying one step ahead of the law. FBI Special Agent Dylan (Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes-and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist. But he's forced to partner with Alma (Laurent), an Interpol detective about whom he is instantly suspicious. Out of desperation he turns to Thaddeus (Freeman), a famed magic debunker, who claims the bank heist was accomplished using disguises and video trickery. One thing Dylan and Alma agree on is that the Horsemen must have an outside point person, and that finding him (or her) is key to ending the magicians' crime spree. Could it be Thaddeus? Or Alma? Or could it really be... magic? |

Greta Gerwig (Greenberg, To Rome With Love) stars in and co-wrote this bright and breezy modern fable by Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Kicking and Screaming). She plays Frances, a dancer who has yet to find a clear direction in her life.
Nearly 30 years of age, Frances loses her New York apartment, her career is going nowhere slowly, she lacks a relationship, and is at odds with her best friend Sophie. Nevertheless, she still manages to live her life with joy and lightness, open to love and adventure.
With sparkling dialogue, peopled with intelligent, witty characters, and shot in luscious black and white, Frances Ha is reminiscent of Woody Allen's best work. Gerwig delivers a star turn, with great supporting performances by Mickey Sumner, Adam Driver (Girls), Grace Gummer and Michael Zegen in this funny, warm and ultimately uplifting film.

Kris is derailed from her life when she is drugged by a small-time thief. But something bigger is going on. She is unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of a presence that permeates the microscopic world, moving to nematodes, plant life, livestock, and back again. Along the way, she finds another being—a familiar, who is equally consumed by the larger force. The two search urgently for a place of safety within each other as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of their wrecked lives.
Shane Carruth’s sensuously directed and much anticipated sophomore effort (his feature debut, Primer, won the Sundance Film Festival 2004 Grand Jury Prize) is a truly remarkable film that lies beyond the power of language to communicate while it delivers a cohesive sensory experience. With its muscular cinematic language rooted in the powerful yearnings felt before words can be formed, Upstream Color is an entirely original, mythic, romantic thriller that goes in search of truths that lie just beyond our reach. Starring Amy Seimetz, Shane Carruth, Andrew Sensenig, Thiago Martins |

The legendary Bordeaux region, ‘the best plot of land in the world', has been producing valued wine for centuries. The region's fortunes, long exposed to the vagaries of climate, are now swayed by market forces. In 2010, when a vintage year was on the cards, the global financial crisis ensured that Western pockets were empty, and cashed-up Chinese buyers set the price. This shift, fuelled by the East's obsession with these illustrious vineyards, created a perfect wine storm; co-director and vigneron Warwick Ross documented the upheaval.
Narrated by Russell Crowe, Red Obsession is an expertly told, delectable tale of a much-coveted global commodity in times of change..

For his first English-language film, Korean master Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, Joint Security Area) has crafted a haunting neo-Gothic thriller filled with unforgettable images and thrilling performances by three of Australia's finest actresses.
When India Stoker (Jane Eyre's Mia Wasikowska) loses her father (Dermot Mulroney) in a car accident, her seemingly idyllic life is shattered. After long-lost uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) arrives and moves in with India and her unstable mother Evie (Nicole Kidman), things begin to turn strange. Despite the arrival of a kindly aunt (Jacki Weaver), who warns of impending disaster, we watch this dysfunctional family slowly unravel. In a story dripping with atmosphere, brooding menace, teenage angst and budding sexuality, a shocking climax seems inevitable.
Revered for his provocative and stylish films, Park has created a visually astonishing and terrifying feature that nods to Hitchcock and other suspense masters.

“Almodóvar followers who have secretly been hankering for a return to the broad, transgressive comedy of his early work will be thrilled by I’m So Excited!, a hugely entertaining, feelgood celebration of human sexuality.” – Variety
Ten thousand feet in the air, Mexico-bound Peninsula Flight 2549 runs into trouble when its landing gear malfunctions, and the plane is put in a holding pattern. On board, the cabin crew deal with the situation by putting economy class to sleep (with the help of some handy drugs) and breaking out the tequila and mescaline in business class, where the passengers include a virgin psychic, a dominatrix, a soap star and a corrupt banker.
Gleefully returning to the raunchy camp of his Pepi, Luci, Bom and the Other Girls (MIFF 1991) days, director Pedro Almodóvar delivers a biting satire on contemporary Spanish politics – the biting in this case being outrageously playful and sexually suggestive. With a top-notch cast of Spain’s finest acting talent (including a cameo from Pénélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas) and hyper-real visuals, I’m So Excited! is a screwball farce in vintage Almodóvarian style.
“Littered with hilariously over-the-top moments … I’m So Excited! is a deliberately broad and bold sexual comedy.” – Screen Daily |
