| One of our favourite filmmakers has excelled again. Oscar-winning documentarian Errol Morris (The Fog Of War, The Thin Blue Line) looks at the abuse and torture of prisoners by U.S. soldiers in the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad with a peculiar fixation in Standard Operating Procedure. The scandal, of course, came to light in 2004 through photographs taken by the Army members who served as prison wardens. The film is stunning and shocking and shows that the US army in Iraq is out-of-control. It's not even the first picture to focus on the notorious Abu Ghraib prison. What it is is the first time Errol Morris has looked at these issues, and that makes the difference. This is the first documentary ever to be shortlisted for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. |

Inspired by true events, CHILDREN OF THE SILK ROAD is a sweeping yet intimate story set against war-torn China in the 1930's. The film centres on a young English journalist, George Hogg (Golden Globe winner JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS - The Tudors, Matchpoint) a determined nurse, Lee Pearson (RADHA MITCHELL - Melinda and Melinda, Finding Neverland)) and the leader of a Chinese partisan group, "Jack" Chen (CHOW YUN FAT - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World's End) who meet in desperate and unexpected circumstances during the Japanese occupation of China just prior to World War II.
Together, and with the assistance of Madame Wang (MICHELLE YEOH - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha), Hogg, Pearson and Chen rescue 60 orphaned children leading them on an extraordinary journey, across hundreds of miles of treacherous terrain, through snow-covered mountains and an unforgiving desert. Along the way they discover the true meaning of love, responsibility and courage.
CHILDREN OF THE SILK ROAD also features David Wenham (Moulin Rouge, 300) as the seasoned foreign correspondent Barnes, and 16 year old Sydney schoolboy Guang Li in his first cinematic role as the orphan leader Shi Kai. |
